Events
Dates, nature, importance, media and translations.
An event is a dated entry in a category: a title, a description, a date, and whatever helps place it. This page is about the events in your categories. To change an event in a category that isn't yours, you send a proposal to its owner.
Adding an event
Three paths lead to the same form:
- on the Studio's Events page, the green + button, to the right of the Events and Pending tabs;
- under My categories, a category's ⋮ menu, then Add event;
- on the timeline, the green + button at the top right — on a large screen only.
Give it at least a category, a title, a description and a date, then click Create event. In your own category, it is published right away.
The date
One-time or period. A one-time event has a single date: a coronation, a first flight. A period has a start and an end: a war, a reign. For a period that is still going on, leave the end date empty.
Precision. Choose what you actually know:
- Day, Month or Year;
- Decade: type the first year,
1960for the 1960s; - Century: type the first year,
1900for the 20th century; - Era: an approximate year, for the distant past.
Before Christ. Check Before Christ next to the year.
Nature, importance and featured
The nature says what kind of event it is: a battle, an invention, a birth… Click the Nature field: the window offers AI suggestions based on your title and description, your recent choices, and a search. Suggestions are free.
Importance, from 1 (Detail) to 5 (Major), is used by the timeline's Minimum importance filter; and when events are grouped into a cluster, the most important one is shown first. If the category has turned importance off, the form says so instead of showing the setting.
Featured event highlights the event on the timeline. It also counts for anniversary notifications: when several anniversaries fall in the same email, a featured event is more likely to be the one put forward.
Territory, optional, says where the event took place: a city, a country, "Worldwide".
Image and references
In the Media & References section:
- Image: paste the address of an image from Wikimedia Commons or NASA. Its license is checked when you save: an image that cannot be reused commercially is refused. Pick a light or dark background to suit the image.
- References: the addresses of your sources, one per line.
Enriching with AI
On the Premium and Premium+ plans, the Enrich (AI) button searches for you:
- a photo under a free license, validated — 1 AI credit;
- references, real and verified links — 5 AI credits.
You choose the image to keep, and uncheck the links you don't want. The event must have a title.
Translations
Write the event in your language: BerlinOne translates it automatically into the other two, usually within seconds. The language tabs above the title show each version.
When you change an event's text, in any language, the other languages are translated again from that new text. Until then, they show the original version.
Aliases
An alias makes an event that belongs to another public category appear in yours, without copying it. Its content follows the source: if the source changes, so does the alias.
- Open the event form and, near the top of the form, in the Classification section, choose the Alias type.
- Search for the source event by title, or paste its identifier.
- Save.
Only a category's owner can add an alias to it, and only a dated event from a public category can be a source. An event's type cannot change after it is created.
Managing your events
The Studio's Events page lists a category's events. Open it with the Go to Events button, at the top right of the Studio, at the end of the search bar — a green button showing a calendar icon —, or with Manage events in a category's ⋮ menu. The left-hand panel filters them by status, type, importance or featured, and sorts them by date, title, status or importance.
To edit an event, click the pencil on the right of its row; to delete it, the trash can right next to it. To delete several, first click Select events, above the list.
If something goes wrong
"This date doesn't exist" — April 31, for example. Check the day, or choose a coarser precision.
"Full date required for Day precision" — switch to Month or Year if you don't know the exact day.
The image is refused — its license forbids commercial reuse, or it comes from neither Wikimedia Commons nor NASA. Use Enrich (AI) to find a free image.
The + button is grayed out — your category has reached the 30 events allowed by the Free plan. Its tooltip says so.
"This category is locked" — lift the lock from My categories, ⋮ menu. See Categories.
