Categories
Follow a category, create one, choose who can see it.
A category gathers events around a subject: the history of medicine, the presidents of the United States, the Affair of the Diamond Necklace. You can follow other people's categories, and create your own.
Everything happens in the Studio, reached from the portal. Its three tabs are at the top of the page: My follows, My categories and Public catalog. Each category has its own card; its buttons are on the right of the card.
Finding a category
The Public catalog tab shows published categories. The left-hand panel helps you find your way:
- Source: your own publications, those from the Community, your Friends, or Organizations & Companies;
- Display: all of them, the ones you don't follow yet, the ones you follow, or the ones you have hidden;
- Themes: check one or more themes. The Only my themes box limits the list to the themes chosen in your Preferences;
- Sort by: popularity, newest, name or number of events.
The search bar at the top of the page finds a category by name.
A category's quick preview
Double-click a card, in any Studio tab, to open the category's quick preview: its description, themes, creator, number of events and number of followers. Enough to decide before following it.
The small ⓘ, on the right of the card, gives a summary when you hover over it: number of followers and events.
Following and unfollowing
Click the star on the right of the card: the category joins My follows, and you can show it on the timeline. Click the filled star to stop following it.
A category you follow has been removed from the catalog? Its owner made it private: you no longer have access, and it leaves your list. It still stays among your follows, at the bottom of the My follows tab, in a Removed from the catalog section that only appears in that case. If the owner publishes it again, it comes back to your list on its own; otherwise, click Unfollow to let it go.
Hiding a category from the catalog
Not interested in a category? Open the ⋮ menu on the right of its card and choose No longer suggest: it disappears from the catalog. This choice is only offered for a category you don't follow.
To find it again, choose Hidden in the Display section of the left-hand panel, then click Restore on its card.
Creating a category
- Open the My categories tab, then click the + button at the top right, just before My Shares.
- Give it an icon (an emoji), a name and a description. If an organization or a company maintains it, enter its name under Organization.
- Choose 1 to 5 themes. Suggest themes proposes a selection based on the name and description.
- Choose its visibility, private or public, and check Follow this category to show it on your timeline.
- Confirm.
You can also have the BerlinOne Lab create it, with the help of AI.
The Event importance management box, unchecked, removes importance from the events: useful for a neutral list, such as a series of prime ministers, where none is more important than another.
Private, shared or public
- Private: only you can see it.
- Shared: it stays private, but the people you have invited can see it too. To invite someone, click the two-person icon on the right of the card (Share to friend): see Sharing and proposing.
- Public: it is in the catalog, and anyone can read and follow it.
Publishing, and removing from the catalog
To make a category public, open the My categories tab and click the globe on the right of its card (Publish).
To remove it from the catalog, click the globe again (Unpublish). Before you confirm, BerlinOne tells you what this will affect:
- people who follow it lose access: on their side, it moves to the Removed from the catalog section;
- the aliases pointing to its events from other categories, yours or other people's, are permanently deleted.
Locking a category
The lock freezes a category: nobody can create, change, delete or approve anything in it any more — not even you. It is meant for two cases:
- protecting a category for a while against a slip of the hand, for example while you rework it before publishing it again;
- closing the door to changes, when you no longer want anyone to touch it or propose anything in it.
Open the ⋮ menu on the right of its card and choose Lock. To lift the lock, choose Unlock in the same menu.
Deleting a category
A category can only be deleted once it is empty:
- Open the ⋮ menu on the right of its card, then Manage events, and delete all its events.
- Approve or reject any pending proposals.
- Go back to the My categories tab, open the card's ⋮ menu, then Delete.
If people follow it, BerlinOne tells you before you confirm: the category will disappear from their follows.
AI categories
The Premium and Premium+ plans give access to special categories, which you won't find in the Studio: their events are created by AI, on request, for the period you are looking at. Today there is one: AI Flash.
- On the timeline, in the left-hand panel's Categories section, click + Add category and choose AI Flash.
- A small AI Flash box appears on the timeline; you can move it. Click Generate in the box.
- Say, if you like, what you want to add: "artistic movements", "scientific discoveries"… Choose 3 or 5 events, and the period, which by default is twice the visible period.
- Click Generate at the bottom of the window.
Each generation costs 1 AI credit, whatever the number of events.
To erase them, click the trash can to the right of Generate in the box. Erasing is permanent.
If something goes wrong
The + button is grayed out and shows 1/1, 5/5… — you have reached your plan's number of categories. Delete one, or move to a higher plan from My Subscription.
"Cannot delete this category" — it still holds events, or pending proposals. Empty it first.
"This category is locked" — lift the lock from the card's ⋮ menu before making any change.
AI Flash is not in the list — it is reserved for the Premium and Premium+ plans.
