The timeline

Choose which categories to show, move through time, zoom, and read an event.

The timeline puts the events of several categories side by side, so you can see what was happening at the same time. Open it from the portal, with the Timeline entry point.

The settings are in the left-hand panel. The arrow at the top of the panel closes it, to give all the room to the events, and opens it again.

Choosing the categories shown

The timeline shows up to 5 categories at once, chosen from the categories you follow — the ones under Studio → My follows.

  1. In the left-hand panel, Categories section, click + Add category.
  2. Search for the category by name, then click it.

To remove one, click the ✕ next to its name. To change their order, drag them by their handle.

Moving through time

  • With a mouse: drag the timeline left or right, grabbing an empty area.
  • With a trackpad: swipe left or right with two fingers.
  • With your finger, on a tablet: drag the timeline.

For bigger jumps, use Quick navigation: the arrows move back or forward by 100 years, 10 years, one year or one month.

Going to a date

The Observation date is the point you are looking from: the view is built around it, marked by the vertical line and the yellow label.

  1. Type a date in the field, in the form 1944-06-06, or pick it from the calendar.
  2. Click Recenter, below the field, to bring the view back to that date.

You can also search for an event or a date in the search bar at the top of the page: "Maurice Richard Riot", "June 6, 1944".

The navigation map

At the bottom of the screen, the navigation map sums up the whole period covered by your categories. The squares show where the events are: click a cluster of them to go there.

The small tab above it folds it away and brings it back.

Zooming

  • Zoom level: the time scale, from century to day.
  • Time density: tightens the scale to fit more events on screen.

Reading an event

Each card gives the event's title, its date and its category.

  • Click a card to select it: it comes to the front. The Selection active banner, at the top, brings you back to it after you have moved; its ✕ ends the selection.
  • Click the eye, at the bottom of the selected card, to open its quick preview: the description, date, importance, nature, territory, image and sources.
  • The ⋮ menu, next to the eye, lets you, depending on your rights, edit the event or propose a change to it.

In the quick preview, at the top right, the speaker reads the event aloud, and the button next to it copies its information. The first time an event is listened to, it can take about twenty seconds.

When events crowd together

When several events fall in the same spot, BerlinOne groups them into a cluster: a single card, with a +2, +5… badge. Click the badge to see all the events in the group.

  • Cluster sensitivity: at 0, nothing is grouped; the higher the value, the more nearby events are grouped.
  • Card size: from XS, the most compact, to L, the most complete.

Filtering

In the panel's Filters section:

  • Minimum importance: shows only events of this importance or higher, from 1 to 5;
  • Featured only: only the events marked with a star;
  • Event types: one-time events, periods, or both.

If nothing shows up

"No category selected" — add a category in the panel, Categories section.

"No events at this point in time" — your categories have events, but not around this date. Find them on the navigation map at the bottom of the screen, and click a cluster.

"The view ends here" — there are no more events in this direction. Change the observation date to go further.

Still nothing — check your filters: a minimum importance set too high, or Featured only, can hide everything.
