Getting started

Sign in, find your way around the portal, and follow your first categories.

BerlinOne organizes history into categories — the history of medicine, the presidents of the United States, your own family — and places their events on a timeline. To get started, all you need is to follow a few categories. If you'd like to understand first how it all fits together, read Key concepts.

Signing in

For now, BerlinOne is available by invitation. Sign in with the email address that received the invitation, in one of three ways:

  • Continue with Google;
  • Continue with Microsoft;
  • Continue with Email: you receive a sign-in link, valid for 60 minutes.

There is no password to create or remember.

The first time

  1. A banner explains what BerlinOne keeps about you. Click Got it to continue.
  2. BerlinOne gives you a temporary pseudonym, based on your email address. Change it right away: open your profile menu at the top right, then Profile.

The portal

The portal is BerlinOne's home page. On it you will find:

  • search, in the middle, to find a category or an event;
  • BerlinOne news;
  • four entry points: the Timeline, the Studio, where you manage your categories, the BerlinOne Lab, which creates a category with the help of AI, and your Preferences;
  • at the top right, Subscription and your profile menu, which also leads to this help.

Searching

Type at least three characters in the portal's search: a name, a word, a place. Results are grouped into Categories and Events.

You can also search by date:

  • 1944, 1944-06 or 1944-06-06;
  • 1939-1945 for a range of years;
  • 44 BC or -44 for a date before Christ.

When you search for a year, a month or a day and the search finds results, the Express button takes you straight to it on the timeline.

Following your first categories

The timeline draws on the categories you follow. Until you follow at least one, it stays grayed out on the portal.

Two ways to follow one:

  • From search: click an event from a category you don't follow yet, then Follow and view. The category is added to the ones you follow, and the timeline opens on that event.
  • From the Studio: open the Public catalog tab at the top of the page, browse the categories, and click the star on the right of the card of the ones you like.

You will then find all the categories you follow under Studio → My follows, where you can also stop following one.

Choosing your themes

The public catalog holds many categories. To see only what interests you, open Preferences — from the portal, or your profile menu at the top right —, Themes of Interest section, and check your themes.

In the Studio, the Only my themes box then limits the catalog to those themes. Your themes change nothing on your timeline.
